I have an e-machine. When I first turn the machine on I get an "HPFSCHED" error message. I can click and it will go away but it is annoying. Also when I try to defrag or run diskscan the computer will hang up. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum:

Try this:

and your problem will be solved, at least partly. If this is the reason the defrag does not run.

Howdy

Run defrag in "Safe Mode". In safe mode there are no drivers loaded, and it should run without interuption.

Good Luck

Argh..have new system glitches of my own, so can identify with frustration. Can't find the other link, but here at Whidbey is StartUp items and how to disable (http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Running_items.htm). We both have HP printers on our puters, and that file you mentioned is turned off (in msconfig) in both our puters. You might make sure that HP's installation disk didn't stick the..think "Instant Delivery" stuff on there..if so, uninstall or disable it...or, if you actually want it, then find a way to configure it. But be careful because once, when a phone tech was out here working on our phone, he said that a lady's puter was going online every night with the Instant Delivery stuff and then not releasing her phone line afterwards. His "repair" for her was turning off the HP stuff.. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

There was a lot of "stuff" on a EMachine we worked on, so would recommend turning off some things in msconfig. Did the Defrag work in Safe Mode okay? And which OS are you running...ME?? I think that's a separate issue from the HP stuff...but as I said, I am getting weird glitches and errors all over the place on my new one...so what do I know???

I've tried all of the above solutions with no results. My computer still hangs up when I try to defrag or scan disk. Any more suggestions?

Go to Start/Run, type msconfig, click OK/Startup, uncheck the item that has hpfsched in it, restart the computer.

Press Ctrl-Alt-Del on the Desktop, shut down all programs, except Explorer, Systray, and your firewall(if you have one), by clicking on each program and clicking End Task, run ScanDisk and Disk Defrag.

An easier way to shut down programs to defrag is with a program named end-it-all (http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/enditall/) it will shut down all running programs except the ones that you don't want it to with one click of the mouse even works in win XP and ME.

DOS's Scandisk can sometimes do better .
Toggle F8 or press Ctrl key during bootup ( depends on your computor ) , choose Command prompt only ( NOT Safe mode Command prompt ), then at the C: prompt , type Scandisk /all & press Enter .
When finished , type win & press Enter .

if doing the scan from within DOS, also use the "autofix" switch.

scandisk /all autofix
