I am fixing a spare computer.
I have a problem when I start my computer I get two consectuive beeps followed by a single beep.
A red writing flashes at the screen "CPU setting incorrect"

followed by:

Wait CMOS Battery low
CMOS display type Wrong

I then go into BIOS by pressing f1.
It then goes into an AMIBIOS which has a pedestrain graphical interface (strange since other computers I have worked with before never had this).

I then click into standard icon, standard icon pop-up dialog box appears and from there click on "Pri master". I then click on a serious of autodetect and then do save and exit. This will then load my Ooperating System. Once my operating system is loaded I cannot view "my computer" or "Windows Explorer" however I can save and open files.

For example if I click on my computer Icon I get a message an "Explorer Erroro dialog box" (red circle with cross)

Has message saying:
"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists please contact the vendor."
<ok-button> <details-button>

If I click on details-button it gives me some writing:
Explorere invalid page fault ...
eax-00xxx ...
0067 xc...

If I shut down the computer with all power and then restart within say 5 minutes then the computer loads without any "CPU setting incorrect" message but I still get explorer error message.

What can be the problem?

Looks like you need to replace your CMOS battery-it's failing to keep the system settings you define in the BIOS, this is a sure sign of a failing battery.

>It’s failing to keep the system settings you define in the BIOS,

Yes because I do not get the beep sequences if I restart my computer within say 5 minutes but if I leave the computer for a longer period then all the setting is lost which includes time and date.

I have a CMOS battery, which is approximately 2 cm in diameter that I salvaged along with some other bits and bob when I threw away an old computer, will this still work?

Sorry, going to have to pull this one and check to see if the numbers match...plus generally it is much better to get a fresh one.

One other possibility, make sure that if this board has a clear CMOS jumper that it is in the "RUN" position.....

Can you use explorer in safe mode?

Seems i recall a similar problem once before on a pc where the person who had this problem had a bad memory stick; no to odd as memory problems can cause all kind of wierd problems.

Try removing/replacing your current memory and see if that helps.

You could try FDISK the drive then formating(make sure your using the right command and a good start-up disk)...then re-install.

Do you have an Original copy of windows, as sometimes copies (which are illegal) can (I've heard) transfer corrupt files.

As long as the CMOS battery fits and is the right Voltage it shouldn't be a problem.

A good clean install should re-solve all these probs, unless you have real bad sectors on your Hard drive

Good luck

>Can you use explorer in safe mode?

Yes it worked in safe mode.

>Try removing/replacing your current memory and see if that helps.

I have noticed memory bank closest to the power supply is empty, I think it is slot one. I have tried to move the chips so one is sitting there.

Now I get 4 consecutive beeps and the screen is greyed out.
Followed by this is a single beep much later.

I have tried to move every thing back to where the chips where before but continues with this problem.

I think it was problem with memory banks.
