If the hard drive is making strange noises that you did not hear before, then it has probably died.
Press and hold the Ctrl key(F8 key for Win 95) during startup, select Command Prompt from the menu, press Enter, type dir at the C:\> prompt, press Enter. If you do not see your hard drive's contents, then it's gone.

Do you know what the term backup means?

More information might help, but a couple of things can be tried...

Boot to a win98 Start Up disk, at the A:\> prompt type fdisk and press [Enter]. If the hard drive is dead you will see a text message at the top that says "No fixed disks present".

If you do not see that message choose option 4, "View partition information". That will tell you if the drive is still partitioned and prepared for use. The [Esc] key will go back to the first screen or exit fdisk. Checking the partition information will not make any changes in the disk, you can check it and exit fdisk without losing any data, if the drive is still functional.

Go to the drive manufacturer's website and download their installation and diagnostic tools software, usually a free download. The website should have instructions for using it. Run that software and it might give you an idea whether the drive is still functional or not.

You might also check BIOS and see if the Primary IDE is set to autodetect. If not, set it on autodetect, save changes and exit, then see if the computer sees the drive.

If none of this gets results, chances are the drive is dead. If it is still under warranty by all means contact the manufacturer concerning a replacement. Most have a 2 year warranty, sometimes more.
