I have a P-2600(parallel). Mine works great and my printer and PC are as old as yours. What OS are you on? What interface does your printer use? Exactly what software are you trying to install? I have XP and the software that came with my P-2600 wasn't compatible with XP including DRIVER! I downloaded new driver from driverguide.com or misterdriver.com(don't remember which) because myapollo.com is no more and just install printer from "New Hardware Wizard" or "New Printer Wizard" using "Have Disk". Then navigate to enu folder\drivers\win2k_xp. Don't use the Apollo Setup. Don't know if that helps you. Might be able to help you more if you give more info and since I also have a 2600.

I have recommended this to many people. Check out Target (http://www.target.com/gp/homepage.html/602-0847294-3135053). Quite often they have printers on sale for less then the cost of new ink cartrages. If all you need is basic color, B/W printing, these will do the job just fine.
There is a difference between inkjet and laser. Laser cost more to purchase but less to run. The quality of black print on laser is much better then ink as well. If you like to print color though, be prepaired to spend some bucks for laser.
For basic printing (occasional letter/document, photos of the kids/pets, birthday card, etc...) stick with inkjet ;)
