I have a home built pc and the power suppply went bad after 1 year...no biggie. I installed another power supply about 2 months ago and at times my computer would shut down out of now where and just this morning this power supply appears dead. Does anyone know what would cause 2 supplies to go bad recently? I dont want to go out and purchase a new power supply and motherboard if there is something else I should be looking at/replacing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suspect an intermittent short as a possibility. Tough to isolate. You could try removing the mobo and running it external to the case with minimal components.

Less likely but possible, is just a bad series of PSUs. It does happen. What brand and model?

How is the power in your area? Lots of outages? Any other devices around the house stop working sooner than normal?

Could be power spikes. My UPS keeps a log of the input voltage, so I can know what exactly the power company is sending down the line...
