View Full Version : Fan Direction?

Hello,

This may seem like a silly question, but I believe I have narrowed down my modem disconnect problem to the PSU. When I took the case off of the PSU, I noticed 2 big heat sinks directly in line with the fan. I had the fan placed so that it "sucked" air past those heat sinks. However, I believe its more efficient to have the air blow directly on those heat sinks. Also, when the fan sucked air, it also brought of heated air from the other components (cpu, video, etc.) So what is the conventional way that a PSU fan should be hooked up in a AT power supply? Any thoughts?

Steve

Blowing out the back of the case.

Normally, PSU fan sucks air out. If you're overheating, add an extra case fan to blow in.

Thanks for the answers.

My guess was that the PSU fan was an "exhaust" fan, but sinse I reversed it, the problem that I was having (modem loosing connection upon getting to ISP main page or before)has gone away! I did put silicone compound on the transistors that are attached to the heat sink, to help with better heat dissapation. I guess if the problem resurfaces, I will breakdown and get a new PSU.
Oh, by the way, a extra exhaust fan did absolutly nothing. The problem went away when I opened the PSU case ( opening the CPU case and blowing a housefan in did nothing) and blowing a small fan directly at the heatsinks.

Thanks Again!
