I have posted this problem before...Please help.....
I hope that I am putting this right...
My system says it is an AMD k6 2/350, 256MB RAM, I had to install a Maxtor 20GB Hard Drive, 5400RPM, 44x CD Rom and Floppy. It has Win 98 installed and I am planning to put a Network card as soon as I figure out why it won't shut down.
When I start it up it runs through the Memory test 4times then scandisk, then it goes into Win98. It runs fine then when I shut it down it stays at the Win98 shutdown screen. This is my first hard drive installation and I am very unsure if I did it correctly. I appreciate any suggestions, consolation....laughter http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Also, if ScanDisk runs on every startup, then make sure you're using the Shutdown command in Start/Shutdown when turning off the computer.
And you can have just a single memory test done instead of four, which will reduce the startup time, by going into BIOS and enabling a line like 'Quick Boot', 'Quick Power On Self-Test', 'Quick Memory Test', etc.

Thanks for the replies.....
mjc,I am going through the troubleshooters that you linked me to. I will let you know how that goes...
Ski, the BIOS suggestion did the trick for the mulitple memory test. Thank you so much.
I was at the point where I didn't know what to do and was going to take my highheeled shoe and beat the computer into submission! Thank you for the direction....you saved it's "life".

O.k. I went through all of the troubleshooters and still no luck. Should I uninstall Win98 and reinstall? Could that be the problem? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Let's not give up hope yet. A re-install should be the last resort.
If we can help you with the shutdown problem the scandisk won't appear
each time you hit the power button.
Here's a link that may help:

I am still going through the trouble shooter that you gave me...I am trying to be thorough. I have one problem though, In one of the pages it is saying to locate the bootlog.txt file and I have tried to do that through find and cannot seem to locate that file. any suggestions?

For bootlog.txt try this.
Click on My Computer. Click on (C) and you should find
it there. That's where it belongs.
Luck.

ranchdog....I looked there and it isn't there. Could it be in another folder? Could that be the problem?
bootlog.txt is a "hidden" file....you need to go to View -> Folder Options -> View and scroll down and set it to "Show all Files"......

I think MS released a patch for W98 shutdown, or have I got it wrong? If so could this possibly help. Poobear has nothing to lose by trying it has she? If you think it might work for her
>>I hav edone a search and I have enclosed a link directly to it<< (about half way down page - be careful there are to different files there for shutdown related probs with 98)

Here's the newest...I ran the Dxdiag on the computer and when it got to the display part it gave me 2 error boxes. "You must be running in 256 colormode or higher. Use the control panel to reset this feature." also Dxdiag Error " Problem getting extra display information, result code: 0x887600de(No direct Draw support). What does this mean?

Just for more information...this is the report that Dxdiag gave me. I am beginning to think that the problem is the display.

The first thing caught my eye nin that reprot was the fact that you are running a "Standard VGA" for a video card...try finding the corect drivers for you make and model of video card...some if not all your problems can be caused by the wrong video drivers.
Boot into "Safe Mode" and see what is listed under display adapters, if there are several sets of dirvers listed remove them and let WIndows reinstall (probably will pick the Standard VGA again), then get the correct drivers for your card and install them. That should clear up the DxDiag problems...and maybe even your shutdown problems, because they can be caused by driver problems too.....

That's a fairly old version of DirectX. It would do no harm to download and install the latest (8.1) Version From Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.asp)

I downloaded the driver(on a disk) for that display and computer says that "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware" and won't install the driver that I know is on there. I had the same message when I tried to install the network card. I took the netcard out and figured that I would tackle the first problem and maybe it would fix the other one.(Silly novice)

Can you download the driver to a floppy disk
and then install? As I take your reply to mean
that you trying to use a CD.
Luck.

What is the file extension on the driver?
Is it .zip or .exe?
In either case it needs to be extracted first, if it is .zip, then you a program like Winzip to extract it; if it is .exe then it is a self extracting file, just double click it and note the folder it extracts to....then redirect windows to it when it asks for the driver location.

mjc, I put it on to a floppy and it loaded beautifully, however I am still having the shutdown problem....I am stumped I ran dxdiag again to see if it could find any other problems and nothing. Thanks for the direction so far and do you have any other ideas?
I found on a system (yesterday in fact) that unless the Chipset drivers are installed First.
Before the Video card drivers . And In the correct mode (turbo in this case Via4in1)
For AGP 4x support In Bios and On the video card.
That the system would not shut down.
In order to solve this I had to remove the chipset drivers
Then force the Video card to default (AGP1x) ( Matrox G450)
using the Cards tweek program. And Bios settings.
Then download all the updated drivers, ( Flash Bios,, Video card bios,, 4in1 ,, video drivers)
Then Reinstall the Chipset drivers correctly in Turbo /High speed mode.
Reboot and test for shut down.
Then install the video card drivers.
Then reset the bios to agp 4x
then run the video card tweek program..
I’m not sure this will help you with your shut down issue.
But it is worth checking into.
Ensure that you have all the latest drivers. Bios updates , settings in bios.
If you have a turbo / optimum setting in the bios. Disable it till you have a clean shut down
Then install them in the correct order

Thank you Rick, now how do I go about doing this? I am not too sure what all those things are and how to go about doing what you have suggested.(this is the time you chuckle and say "Silly Novice") I really don't know too much about this process and this is my first hard drive installation. I do admit that I bit off a bit more than I could chew and I do appreciate all suggestions. However, I am learning alot and I have you guys to thank. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
The Best Place to start with all of this is.
Check what programs you have running when you attempt to shut down and it fails..
Look at the bottom right corner of the task bar for Icons showing what is running.
Also you can use the 3 finger salute ( CTRL-ALT-DEL) to bring up the shutdown program window.
Make note of what is running and what is needed.
Remove all but the “ Explorer and Systray “
Buy using the End task button after you click on a program name.
Once you have all but the two required programs shut down.
Attempt to shut down the system and see if it fails.
If it still will not shut down correct then you should proceed as follows
Correctly identify the Hardware you are working with.
Starting with the Mother board and Video card
If you don’t have the original documentation on these items you can find the info from the Components themselves . Most have the manufacturer and Make, model numbers silk screened on the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) or labeled in some why with code numbers..
Then check the Bios version you are using .
You can find this info during boot up / post display.
Or with a utility from the M/B manufacturers web site,
If a new version of the Bios is available down load it and flash the bios to the new version.
Also while at the Mother board web site.
Check for the latest chipset and on board device drivers for your operating system.
Go the Video cards web site and download the latest version of the Video card drivers.
Again make sure they are correct for your Operating system.
I am assuming You did a clean install of Windows when you installed the new hard drive.
Double check the Bios settings for all devices. ( Load setup defaults) Especially if You undated the bios (Flashed)
Set the hard drive to Auto detect if available ..
If this is correct then you need to install and update the drivers for each component .
Start by installing the M/B device drivers. ( Chipset + onboard devices)
Reboot between each update.
Then install the correct Video card drives.
You can set the optimized settings after you have a stable boot and shutdown working

Rick, I am not too sure what a clean install is but, when I installed Win98 everything went fine. I used the original Win98 CDRom(required by HD Installation instructions).
When I did the Salute, I have found that there is only Explorer running. Is that a problem? Do I have to have systray to shut down?
Poohbear
That’s a good question.
Systray is an active X applet that allows you to display those icons on the bottom right corner of your start menu/task bar.
I just tested it on another system and closed systray and was able to shut down correctly
So it may not be required. But it should be listed ?
You should now find and install the correct device drivers for your hardware.
As stated above starting with the Mother board..
BTW.. Clean Install is.
Installing on a fresh drive with no other Operating system previously installed to over write.
Or installing on another partition where you do don’t over write the previous O/S

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Guess what! It is fixed. I downloaded all of the correct drivers for everything in there and the win98 patch for shutdown and tried a shut down....No success, I looked through everything and it boiled down to a software conflict with one of the databases that I have to use. I put that on another computer that is allocated for that program and voila it is fixed. So simple yeat so difficult to figure out. You guys were wonderful and the next time I have a problem I know where to go. Thank-you all for yor help and patience.
