One really good place to start is MSCONFIG. Go to Start/Run, type in msconfig. You'll see several tabs for different config files, etc. Startup is a great place to start eliminating things that start when the system starts. In the other tabs you can view and edit certain files that Windoze uses to configure itself.
Have fun. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

If you're using 98/ME/ or XP , goto run/type msconfig-this will bring up the microsoft configuration editor. Once it's up and running, click on the startup tab and uncheck anything you don't wish to run at start.
You can also delete any links you see in your start/program files/startup folder.
There are registry keys that you can edit to permantly remove startup programs; but unless your comfortable and proficient in editing the registry-i'd not advise it.

Well I went into msconfig and made a few changes.. should it be set up for "normal startup", where it loads all files and drivers? For some reason the computer in question is set on "selective startup" and config.sys is not selected. should it be?
Right now I can't even successfully run scandisk because something I can't find is writing to the drive. so it says it has restarted 10 times because windows is writing to the drive.
and what the hell is RNAAPP?

RNAAPP ==> Here is a link for it. RNAAPP (http://www.modemhelp.net/newsletter/dun/combatrnaapp.shtml)
And this is some more information on msconfig (http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/)
And this one comes to us from the nice folks and
microsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q281965)
Are you experiencing any specific problems that you want to share with us?

Yes, the computer is currently FUBAR. It has a 56k modem, but connects only around 34k. It's excruciatingly slow just trying to get around on the internet, but the real problems is working in outlook. After the computer connects online, when I open up Outlook, it closes the connection.
And then when you try to send email, it closes it again.
Rnaapp will not go away. It will not be closed down via the ol reliable ctrl alt delete keystroke. And every time the computer is rebooted, it comes up with another funky file running, and is different every time... here are some of those files:
Aqk1155
Lkk7162
Sz3005
Xyi61f4
jj4225
lxdboxcp
stutfix
bttnserv
cpqeaui
kma
atitask
aticwd32
backwebagent
iowatch
osd
ndetect
hidserv
whagent
poproxy
rundll
aolfix
this computer runs like it's powered by a pinto engine. please help.

DO A FULL VIRUS SCAN!!!
If you do not have an onboard scanner that is up to date the try http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/
For general info on what is and is not needed to run at startup try:

Hello Cornbread
The more you know about how your PC works and what is going on in the background the more you will be in control.
One potential cause of much trouble are programs which run in the background without your knowledge [or consent?].
EXAMPLES
1. Go to "Control Panel>FindFast" and learn about it [or just disable it].
This creates Index files in the background at programmed intervals and if you are running Scandisk or Defragmenter this would interfere with their activities.
2. Go to "Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Maintenance Wizard".
I once set this to delete "Temporary Files" at frequent intervals and it totally prevented Disk Defragmenter from completing a task because it forced it to re-commence Defragmentation every few minutes. I assume this was because it made temporary files as part of it's task and when they were deleted it had to restart.
Here's a trick I have learned with "msconfig".
You go to the "Startup" tab and say there are two of the same programs running [which causes a problem] when there should only be one [say "LoadPowerProfile"].
You untick one. This make a change to a Registry value which means the Prog does not run. Here's how it does it.
In "Regedit", go to
"HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion"
You will find a set of Keys with "Run" in the name
They are:
"Run"
"RunOnce"
"RunServices"
"RunServicesOnce"
In these keys are the information telling Windows which which Programs to run at "Startup". Items placed in the "RunOnce" Key are run once only and then deleted from that key.
When you untick a prog in the "Startup" tab in "msconfig" that Prog is moved from one of the "Run" Keys to a Key of the similar name but with an extension added.
"Run" becomes "Run-"
"RunOnce" becomes "RunOnceEx" etc.
If you are happy that your PC is working fine without the prog you unticked you can go to one of these [disabling]Keys, right click on the name and click delete.
The associated unticked box will disappear from "msconfig>Startup" and "Normal Startup" will be displayed in the "General" tab.
WARNING
Only alter the Registry in this way if you are happy that you know what you are doing otherwise ONLY LOOK BUT DON'T TOUCH.
Go to "Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information>Software Environment".
You will find a great number of Progs listed, probably including the one's you're interested in. The info given may help or may make you cross-eyed and confused.
You could use the "Find" facility. I did and found Rnaapp.hlp & Rnaapp.exe.
You could go into "Regedit" and use the "Find" facility.
Explore as much as possible but with with care.
Does your Windows disk include the "Resource Kit Help File"?
This is Microsoft's own explanation of how the operating system functions etc.

Notes on whagent and hidserv HERE (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/r1015400990)
Google searches for Aqk1155, Lkk7162, Sz3005 and Xyi61f4 revealed no matches, which seems a bit supicious!!
To have an uninterupted Scandisk you can either run it from DOS or from Safe Mode or disable all startups from MSCONFIG.

RUN A VIRUS SCAN...ok that's already been said twice, but I felt it couldn't be stressed strongly enough. This sounds very much like a virus or trojan is an excellent possibility.
Right click My Computer then click Properties. Click the Performance tab and see if it has a white box in the middle stating that some or all of your drives are running in MS-DOS Compatibility Mode. Let us know the results, if it is we can provide links to good troubleshooting sites, but there's no reason to confuse you more at the moment...
Connection speeds of 34,000 or so with a 56K modem are not that uncommon, especially in rural areas. I've been connecting at 26,400 for 5 years where I live, and only recently chanced upon a 56K modem that actually gets better connectin speeds. The slow connection speeds could be your phone lines or a modem that your ISP's servers don't like especially well.
When you use [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Del] to shut programs down for scandidk or defrag to run the only two things that have to be there are Explorer and Systray, and Systray is not absolutely required. Anything else can go. RNAAPP is your modem, as stated above. If you want to use the Internet, leave it running.
Don't know what to tell you about Outlook closing, that might be best to leave till later, and see if we can get the thing to run right and make sure we're not dealing with a virus, then deal with it...one thing at a time...

The Outlook problem might be a setting? Remember seeing "disconnect" after this or that in settings. And yes, those of us in rural areas would be thrilled to get 34. Our norm is 26,400 bps and I am currently at 24,000 but we're gonna work on that as soon as get other stuff fixed.
mjc: Thanks for the Pac's Portal link..somehow I lost it, but have replaced it now.
Jim: Thanks for the RNAANPP link. Noticed that mine is "hanging" for awhile after disconnecting..your link gives me stuff to check out.

After uninstalling and reinstalling Norton Antivirus 2001, it found a virus and quarantined it. Anyone familiar with "W32/Klez.gen@mm" virus? What stinks is that the antivirus software was in place when the virus came in.. after reading a summary of this particular virus, it's so powerful and stealthy that even AV software can't detect it.
It got into our computer and mailed itself off to whole bunch of other people. Now I gotta figure out how to unscrew everything.. should I restore the computer? Any help would be awesome.

Ah.. The 'ol stealth virus. They are the baddest of the bad.
Like to shadow around and hide in memory.
Honestly if I were wearing your Rebok's, I'd re-install the
operating system rather that become delirous trying to
correct the mess made by this Virus.
Luck.

There seem to be two new variants of the klez bug out there, both of which are nasty...
Here (http://www.antivirus.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_KLEZ.G) and here (http://www.europe.f-secure.com/v-descs/klez.shtml) are some removla tools, but with something of this nature I would go with the reinstall....reformat and start over from scratch.

Well this is a business computer that's infected. Looks like I managed to stop it anyhow, but restoring isn't an option because they have some big auto parts lookup program called Hollander that has to be activated by the company.
