It seems like when I've been using my pc for a while it will just restart for no reason. What might cause this and how can I fix it?
My system specs are:
p3 733
win 98
64mb geforce 3
dvd and cd-r drives
512 mb ram
the big three for reboots are heat, power supply problem, and RAM problem....try going after the heat first. If the machine hasn't been cleaned out in a while, get a can of compressed air for cleaning computers and blow out the dust, hold the CPU fan so it won't spin (this of course is being done with the machine of and unplugged) before you blow the heatsink. Don't forget the power supply too....
If that down't help the try a small household fan blowing int o the case...
What OS are you using?
You may want to test your RAM by pulling a tick and seeing if the problem disappears, if not try swapping the other stick(s) and repeat.....
Is there anyting specific that seems to cause it (like a certain game)? Or when you try to burn a CD? or just play a moive?
Depending on wht other devices (like USB ones) or wht drives are psing used it could be a power prblem....
Does it happen at the same time everyday? or after being on for a certain length of time? or is totally random?
the first 2 could indicate a power problem external to the machine, the third is one of the signs of a failing power supply (the second could be power supply problems also).
