hi, im having trouble booting my pc.and the problem has really got me.i know its the mainboard becouse i have checked all components with others etc.
what happened was, i was playing medal of honer then a blue screen flashed up for a second and then it shut down and i couldnt turn it of (except for the main power switch).when i turned it on again it started to boot then went into a kind of stanby mode and started to make strange noise.this happens at varios stages of the boot prosess,it seems the longer you leave it unpluged the further it gets.
but this is what really gets me,ive had this problem once before exactly the same after trying to start again and again it worked only to do the same about a month later(now).
any help would be great i have to get this sorted.
anything else you nee to know just let me know.
cheers andrew.

First thing to do is locate the noise. I would suspect hard drive, but it could be CD ROM or a fan too. See if you can tell where that noise comes from, and notice if the hard drive LED lights up at the same time, that may help.
Let us know what you can find out and post some system specs, that may help as well.

packard bell imedia (there help aint that good).

Describe the noise...
If it will get farther along in the boot process after it has been off a while I would suspect a heat problrem and the noise might be coming from the CPU heatsink fan, but until you describe the noise it is had to say......

hi.
The noise comes from the mobo speaker, you can hear it less if you put your finger on it.
the noise is a kind of a gritty noise(sounds a bit like a train)and it will get faster.its not a clear beep sound like when your rams no good.the cpu fans ok swaped it same problem.
i hope this helps if you need more info let me know.

Hello Geezauksev
I think this is a software problem, not a hardware problem and I've experienced it myself.
If I recall it correctly I had a rasping sound coming from the internal speaker and I quickly decided that the software had gone into a loop or something and was producing something like a low frequency feedback in an amplifier [but REALLY low frequency, like 10Hz] so I hit hit reboot [it was either ctrl+alt+del twice or reset] and when the PC rebooted the problem had gone.
I sent you an Email with an attachment on "The BIOS Boot sequence" to help you identify the point where you think it's going wrong.
If you can describe the sequence and where it gets to before the problem occurrs I have diagnostic charts which help pin-point the likely cause of failure.
If you can get to the "F8" > "Startup Menu", you should try "Step-by-Step Confirmation" and press enter to every command line and see if any errors are announced on screen. Also study the steps and get to recognise each one. If you felt really keen you'd note down the steps and keep the record somewhere safe for the next time.

cool, thanks for the email will have a look in the mo.but i would just like to point out that every time its turned on it will get to a diferant point.sometimes it will get to the packard bell screen and sometimes it will get to the windows screen(very rare though).and if you turn it with the button on the front it will do bugger all(except the cpu fan).
cheers andrew.
