http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif My friend believes it got a virus because it wiped out my hard drive but it still works. I am trying to re install win 98 on my second computer. My system installed ok, but when it goes to start windows for the first time the keyboard and the mouse freezes. I have restarted the computer several times and still the same problem. the keyboard and mouse work in safe mode but I can't find a problem in the device manager.
any help would be aprec.

Hello jassenmet,
Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!
I was a little confused trying to determine if you're installing on a second computer, or whether the one with the potential "virus" actually is your second computer.
If we are talking about the same computer in both instances...did you completely erase your HDD (fdisk) and install anew?

the second computer is completely different. let's just forget it's a second computer, let's pretend I only have one.(sorry for the confusion) I formated the hard drive and installed win 98. I had a successful installation and was about to start windows for the first time. I ran into the problem while it was booting up. it stopped at the screen where it asked for windows login, from here everything froze.
I did not have the authentication key for installing win 98, I lost it somewhere, but got one that worked for the installation from a friend. I have the origanal win 98 cd though. could this be my problem.

If the hard drive that has the virus is not completely gone, then you may be able to extract the product key for your Windows CD from it's Registry by doing the following:
-Press and hold the Ctrl key during startup.
-Select Command Prompt and press Enter.
-At the C:\> prompt, type FIND.EXE/I "ProductKey" %winbootdir%\SYSTEM.DAT and press Enter.
