I am trying to use mandrake 8.1 in a computer made by me . the first time i was unable to use my modem because it is a winmodem.I do not know how to use this system so it can accept drivers for my modem ( which is an intel modem an suposedly there are linux drivers for it). So I was advised to use and external modem or an ISA modem . I got the last one which is jumpered. MY question now is , i have a sound card in the computer but the ISA modem came with sound and mic jackets too , is there a need to disable them so they can not produceconflict with my sound card? and if yes how do i do that?
The second and most important question , at this momen I have not reinstalled the winmodem to this machine after I deleted mandarke from it. When I reinstall mandrake will it automatically detect the ISA modem without doing a lot of tweaking?
See my problem is that linux is command oriented and i was just trying it to see if it was as good as many people say , but I KNOW NOTHING REGARDING HOW TO USE THE /DEV/ whatever stuff. An as i have seen you need to know this to make some changes like adding hardaware or drivers.
thanks for your time

Having two sound cards can cause some major head aches.
Check the modem documentation for jumper to disable the sound features on the modem.
if it is in fact a combo modem / sound card.

Once you have disabled the sound card segment of the modem you should be able to install mandrake and it will / should find and install the needed drivers for the ISA modem

The mic and line jack on that modem are for hooking up a mic and speaker to it for voice, on the back should be a chart for the jumpers...
