My new computer speakers think that they are rear speakers even though they are the only speakers connected to my computer.
My system:
Windows Xp
Onboard sound
nforce 3 mobo
Realtek drivers (most current version)
It will play rear sound when set up as a 4 channel speakers system, but otherwise it will not play any sound.

Why choose 4-way when you are only using 2 speakers?

The outputs of the adjacent jacks are changed when alternate settings are picked and maybe line in is supposed to be your fronts in this case? Your audio section in multimedia properties should explain how the jacks work. If not, try the other jacks to see if you get the right sound out of any of the other ones.

I choose 4-way becasue no sound would come out at all when it was 2-way.

I tried the other jacks and only the one I was currently useing (the green one) makes any noise at all, and then only with the for channel sound.

My new computer speakers think

1 Speakers don't 'think'
2 It is your soundcard not your speakers.

If your pc is under warranty, start making calls/emails...

what motherboard model? nforce chipset obviously, but we may be able to Google and find others with the same problem.

Mobo is 8kda epox

I just did I google search and found more then a few sound problems with this specific model, though none of them are the same as mine.

I really don't want to send this motherboard back just for the sound (newegg, where I got it from makes you pay for shipping and a "restocking fee"), so do you have any recomendations on a cheap, good sound card?

Never mind NewEgg, contact Epox. They should warranty it for merely the cost for you to ship it to them. They will diagnose it, fix it if possible or send you a new, tested one. I did this with ASUS.

All right thanks I'll try that.
