Well i dont know if u canh help me i have MDM5 and also Everest Home Edition (dont know why thats relevant but i may as well say everything) I have installed a new heatsink and fan (that is compatible with my Motherboard) And since i have installed it after turning my PC on within about 2 seconds (sometimes less) my PC shuts off and an alarm sounds (the overheating alarm) my fans are all spining yet mt PC shuts off - I actually then forgot to put the fan into the motherboard when i installed my old one again and my PC worked fine which i dont understand - I dont know whether ist because of the following reasons:
1. My old cpu coolers fan had much higher RPM and because of this my Pc thinks that it is broken when i install the new 1 (this isnt backed up by the timw when i forgot to plug in the fan)
2. The heatsink doesnt make proper contact with the Processor (i smudged the thermal compound stuff)

Please help me - any other reasons and or ways to resolve this will be greatly appreciated...

"The heatsink doesnt make proper contact with the Processor (i smudged the thermal compound stuff)"
Sounds to me like you need to make a good job of fitting the heatsink.
I'd imagine that perfect solid-to-solid contact is the ideal, but that if there are any microscopic air gaps [imperfect contact], then heat transfer rate is reduced [bad].
I believe the compound is used to fill those microscopic gaps.
The thicker the compound, the poorer the heat conduction.
Hence you want the thinnest possible layer that will successfully fill any minute air gaps.
And the covering must be complete.

Solid-to-solid = best [but practically impossible to achieve complete contact?]
Compound = next best [but total contact achievable]
Air gap = BAD.

Thanks for that - I am now looking at a heatsink for my other PC that i am building - It also has a Socket A (370) motherboard and im strugglign to find great CPU cooler for it i would like it to be quiet mostly - note my mobo hasnt actualy got screw holes around the procesor slot so things like vantec and thermal right heatsinks are outa the question...
