First of all... I'm from Denmark, so some of the text in this thread is translated from danish, so please excuse me if some of the words are wrong!

I've formatted my harddrive and re-installed Win XP Pro. After that I re-installed my soundcard. It's a INCA88 with 8 in/out. A special soundcard for audio-productions produced by Audiotrak.
When I install the soundcard it starts ok, but in the end it has to install 5 wave-channels (4 stereo channels and 1 main-channel), and here it all goes bad... after installing each channel I get an error sounding like this:

Translated from danish:
"There was an error during installation of this unit. A chapter of installation in this INF-file is invalid."

What does that mean? I've tried to upgrade the drivers and the same problem appears. I've talked to Audiotrak, Microsoft and my local distributor and they couldn't help either...
When I look for the channels in Windows, the 5 channels are there, but there's a yellow "!" in front all of them and I have absolutely no sound at all...

Not a super-expert on this, but...

The driver installation files include the very important ".inf" file.
This is an important file that the driver installation wizard needs to read.
The instructions in that file specify which settings [and exactly what those settings are] go where in the registry [to make the driver files work], and which driver files go where.

The soundcard hardware has within it some memory [ROM?] that includes an identification for this item.
This must match up with the information included within the inf file.
Your inf file must match this or it would not even be accepted as the driver for your hardware. The wizard would report that no driver could be found.
Are there different, but almost identical driver file sets with slightly different inf files?
Could you be using the wrong driver file set?

A warning is being given that "A chapter of installation in this INF-file is invalid".
1. This could simply mean that there is a tiny error in the character sequence or wording within the inf file.
2. Or else it might mean there is a much more serious error.

Read the file [with a text editor] to see if you can find any obvious error.

What would make a whole chapter invalid I wonder?
And what is a chapter? A section with a heading?

I think you need to report this error to the supplier or manufacturer.

http://www.audiotrak.net/support_faq.htm

At this point, I would suggest following the audiotrak directions regarding SAFEMODE removal of drivers. I would reboot following the procedure into SAFEMODE again, and go to DEVICE MANAGER and see if there are still any channels listed and use the REMOVE to clean things out.

Then, try rebooting normally and see if Windose finds the hardware. Follow the directions in the FAq for reloading drivers...

It appears that your hardware is already outdated, so driver support might be an issue as the audiotrak will have their attention to newer models

Also, if an audio program shows up in Add/Remove Programs you might want to try removing them there to clean your system before attempting any reinstall. Residue from previous driver install attempts can confuse new driver installs...

Residue from previous driver install attempts can confuse new driver installs.

I would also suggest a look into the registry and to remove all instances of the software if any exist there prior to a reinstall attempt. You could do it manually or use a registry tool to clean it.

Make a backup first!
