Hello,

I have seen this problem addressed many times here and with pretty good success, but I had bigger problems at the time. I have a typical Windows98 SE shutdown problem, in that I can never get past the "Windows is Shutting Down" screen. I have been told that it is "OK" to turn off the computer from there, but I am not comftorable with that, besides, if I hesitate too long, the system reboots! However,if I go into "Safe Mode" and do a shutdown from "Safe Mode", then it will shut down correctly. I have removed all programs running in the background, but that has had no effect.
BTW, I have installed the Windows98 shutdown patch from Microsoft, and no help there, except to say it did work on my other, older machine.

Specs:
FIC 503+ Mainboard
AMD K6-233 MHZ CPU
128 MHZ RAM (64 MHZ PC 100-Micron, 64 MHZ PC 66 Generic)
Sis 4 Meg Video card. (I am not a gamer..LOL)
Inland El Cheapo Sound Card. (It does what I want it to.)
USR 33.6 Hardware Modem

I suspect that there is an easy fix for this, right under my nose, but it has excaped me so far. I know one of you guys will have the answer!

Thanks,
Steve

Good link, JonathanB, thanks.

Another troubleshooter that you've probably already looked over is at aumha (http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm). My husband got way down the list once before getting to the problem, but did get puter to shutdown..was on 98 original that time.
