View Full Version : Dual Boot
I got a 40GB HD with 4 partitions in my machine loaded with WIN ME in dirve C:. I know that WIN ME runs at FAT32, I wanted to install WIN 2000 or WIN XP, on my drive D: . Do I have to re format my whole drive or I can directly install WIN XP on other partitions, Does WIN XP convert my drive D into NTFS?

No, you do not need to reformat you HDD-install XP to any partition except C
the install will give you the choice between NTSF and FAT32.

it will automatically give you a screen from which to choose, later you can adjust the time it waits before making the default choice on it's own.
default time is 30 seconds, I just would press enter- until I learned how to adjust it.

Do you think it will not give some conflicts on my existing hardware, Most of my hardware are not XP compatible? Can I stil used my existing setting using WIN ME.

I think you will have to give it a try and find out.

might be helpful if you went and got all the updated device drivers prior to install (saved in a folder)- so you have all that ready.
The main thing is the amount of RAM- (at least 256 recommended) and that your BIOS is at least year 2000 or better.
edit: winME on your other partition will not be affected at all. It is a seperate operating system, on a seperate drive.\
be sure to format winXP to FAT32 if you want to share files between winME

it probably won't work very well if your BIOS are pre- 2000.

Its good news its working FINE.. Its working maybe due to the following reasons:
1. Im running my 40GB HD on Promised Card
2. This card shows that BIOS version newer than my main board BIOS
one things I have noticed some of the programs need to be installed in the same partition, but some are running normal. OFFICE doesn't work I need to installed it on the same XP partitions. Thanks for your help.
One more thing I need to know
When I shut down the machine from WIN ME it's automatically shutting down while in WIN XP it doesn't?? Is there any settings I need to do so that it will shut down automaticaly like WIN ME. Coz even it says "Its now safe to shut down the machine" It didn't turn off the power using power botton I need to switch off the main supply like wall outlet.

Roel,
That is probably due to the fact that your BIOS is pre-'00 and XP cna't really tell the machine to shutdown...it could be that XP detected that your BIOS wasn't fully compatible and installed in such a way that it doesn't have full control over all the functions of the machine.

So there is no other way that my system will shutdown automatically?? But I installed it in other machine having the latest BIOS running on P4 but its the same the final message says "its now safe to turn off your computer" but the power still on. Unlike WIN ME it also shows the same but after few seconds power will automatically shut off.
