A friend had me add some mem.(256pc100) to his compaq 7470.I had added another 256 before in the #1 slot leaving the 64 that came with the machine in the 0 slot,ran fine no problems for 8 weeks.When I swaped out the 64 for the new 256 it would not boot(not POST,not error mesg.,no beeps).OK,so maybe a bad chip?,I pulled the new mem.,and tried it in a computer I build,,ran fine(after I pulled the 512pc133 from that computer).
Now this is the weird part,put the 64pc100 back in,it come's up no O/S found.????,OK,I booted useing a boot disk,no partions,nothing,,looks like a new Hard drive.Hmmm,I swap the H/D into another computer,same thing,,it is wiped clean???.Fine,I put the new mem.back in run a F/disk and restore from the Compaq disk,up and running fine.
OK,so what did I do wrong?I should say all the mem.chips are Centon,never had a problem with them before.I do use a wrist strap,and ground the cases before I even open one up.In 20+ years of mucking about with computers,this is one of the wierdest I've seen.
