I installed a new P4 chip on an Intel mobo, but plugged all the stuff from my old system into the board. When I booted, I got the 3 beeps that means I had bad memory. Turns out I was using PC100 RAM from my old machine, but the new board required PC133. The RAM was good, but the new board wouldn't take it. When I installed PC133 RAM, worked like a charm. And the old memory was good on the old machine.

I'd heard that you could use slower memory in a faster board, but that it slows everything down -- evidently that wasn't entirely true. So if you get a bad memory error after upgrading your mobo, check the mobo specs to see what speed memory the board requires; you may need to buy new RAM too.

You could have used the old memory if you had the BIOS option to run the memory at the FSB-33, plus it is usually theother way around; faster memory in a slower board...but why use Sdram with a P4? and can you use Sdram anyway?

Thr P4 was designed to use the RDRAM for best performance and it runs ok on DDR, but with SDRAM you aren't going to get much better than a PIII
