View Full Version : Just not sure about heat sensor
I have this case
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16811133108
and a mobo that supports a LGA 775 cpu. I am a little confused as to where i am to place the heat sensor for the case. From the pic in the manual it looks like i tape it to the bottom of the cpu, but that does not seem right to me. any help would be appricated thx. First time builder long time gamer

Welcome to the forum Nuob.
The pictures in the manual are correct. This is exactly where you want the sensor placed.
If you have already installed everything then your option would be to place it on the mobo right behind the CPU or on the heatsink somewhere. Either of these situations won't provide you with a true and accurate temp however.
Good luck on your build.
i posted the question while i was at work i went home and looked at the cpu. with this cpu thier are no pins it is flat and the center is raised. I fee like if i put this on the center i will be in the way. Also the wires leadding out will be the way. Sorry to be doughtfull but the pic in the manual look nothing like my cpu does and does not install the same way. Thank you for the welcome to the forum wi will be checking back before i do the install.

Sorry about that. :o Of course the LGA 775 is different. I guess I was looking at the forest and didn't see the trees at the time.
Everything I can find gives no definitive answer. Almost everything I found gave a statement to the effect of "for the CPU temperature sensor, normally, place it between the CPU cooler and the CPU, or place it between the CPU cooler fins. Bottom line, anywhere or any way that you can stick the sensor to the cooler or CPU to measure the temperature accurately". Not much help, huh?
It might be worth it to contact Thermaltake's support and ask their recommendations for the LGA 775. Worth a shot, or maybe someone else will chime in.
I did go to the thermaltake web site and sumitted a support question will see how that goes. A guy at the local PC club said i should just place it between the cpu and heat sink thye said to make sure i use alot of thermal "goo". When he said the second part I sort of got confused everything i have read about using artic silver 5 say just apply the recomended amount wichth is half the size of a bee bee. Well i am in no hurry but wanted to install the mobo and cpu some time this week. Thanks for the replys poppy :)

Nuob,
You can find more discussion (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=37&threadid=1643926&enterthread=y) on the topic here.
Also, a some people say no to between the HSF and CPU. I think I tend to agree because it would seem also that the HSF would not be sitting level on the CPU. Thermal grease is designed to fill the voids on the bottom of the HSF so that there is an even distribution and the HSF makes good contact with the CPU. Too much thermal grease is just as bad as too little because you'll end up with an uneven surface also and when you place the HSF on you will just press out extra and run the risk of the thermal grease getting on components you would not want it on.
I would like to know what Thermaltake recommends on the LGA 775, but to me the logical place would between the fins on the HSF as close to the core of the CPU as possible. It would not be totally accurate, but I think close enough (unless you are an extreme OC'er and want to monitor your temps very closely :D ).
The bottom line I think is that in most cases it becomes a personal decision and the debate on where to place them will continue.
The reply from thermaltake
Please place the sensor on the heatsink and as close to the bottom as
possible.
