My old power supply broke, so I bought a new one (300 watt ATX) and now my computer can turn on, but it dosen't boot up. Nothing happens except for a few things: A red light on the mother board lights up and the light for the CD drive lights up, but the fan on the heatsink dosen't move. The fan in the power supply does, however.

I am sure that I plugged in my power supply correctly into the CD drive, mobo, etc.

It's on the correct voltage, too.

My motherboards is a K7SEM. My processer is a 1.4 Gigahertz AMD Anthlon.

Thanks in advance.

Hello

I'm using diagnostic charts.

1. The PC is not "dead" [you have lights and a fan].
2. Did POST run?
In other words, was there a single beep for a successfur POST or multiple beeps to signal a problem?
3. If you have no beeps then you have NO POST.
4. If you do have beeps but have no Monitor display then you have a DISPLAY PROBLEM.
5. Since the fan on the heatsink doesn't move I'll guess that you have condition 3 [no beeps = NO POST].

NO POST
1. I assume it appears that POST did not run and that there were no audible beeps. This is, therefore, a POST problem.
2. I will assume that the power supply voltages are correct.[test if possible]
3. Disconnect all peripherals and system adapter cards except the keyboard and monitor.[After switching off and disconnecting from the power source naturally]
4. Boot the PC and if POST still does not run you have a faulty system board [This is only if your power supply is good](So says the chart but I wonder about the video card).
5. If it does run; re-connect the floppy and run advanced diagnostics if you can and test the system board. If the system board fails the tests then it is faulty. If it passes the tests then:
6. Switch off, re-connect one peripheral or adapter card and reboot. If post does not run then this last item is faulty. If it does boot, test this last item with the diagnostics software. If it fails the test it is faulty.
7. Repeat step 6 until all items are reconnected and tested then re-test the whole system.

If POST now completes but the Startup process fails at some other point report back to this forum and send me an Email.
