View Full Version : Hardly any sound from new PC

I just bought a custom built CD, seems pretty good except I can hardly hear it even with every volume bar at max.

Speakers and headphones only work when they are plugged into the purple plug (for rear speakers) but only very faintly, there is no sound at all when I plug into the green audio plug at the front or the back.

Anyone have any ideas of what the problem is? It seems odd that I get very faint volume, I thought it would either work or it wouldn't.

If there is a small speaker icon on the left side of the screen down by the clock...you would want to right-click on that and open the Volume Controls panel

Check to see where the Play Control is set at...

well, all the volume bars are at max.

I don't know where the Play Control is set at

I would look for items with the mute box checked and uncheck them...the only one that would be best left muted would be the microphone if you have one connected.

yeah, microphone is the only one muted

I'm wondering if they installed the audio drivers. Do you know if you have on board sound or a sound card?

If you're still under warranty I think I'd have them cure the problem since it is not responding to basic troubleshooting...

The only problem is that I bought it off ebay and Im liable for shipping.

Edit: according to the seller it has an on board sound card.

The audio device is NVIDIA nForce Audio

Did the rig come with a driver disk for the motherboard?

yes.

do you think I should reinstall the NVIDIA nForce driver?

The guy has offered to send me a Sound blaster live 5.1 pci sound card.

Would you take a look in Device Manager under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers and see if there are any ! or ?...

I believe that most motherboards with onboard sound have it enabled by default in the BIOS, but you might want to also have a look there and make sure that it is enabled...

there are 10 devices under Sound, video and game controllers but none of them have ! or ? next to them. Are they supposed to?

No they are only to alert you of a problem.

If you have the speaker in the task bar by the clock, your sound drivers are loaded.

Double click the speaker. In Volume control page, click on Options, Properties, Playback. Put a check mark in at least: Volume, Wave, Auxiliary, Line In, Cd Player and Pc Speaker. Click ok. Now make sure nothing is muted. Then close or minimize Volume Control. Try playing something to see if the problem persists.

It may be that your speakers are non-powered and you may need a powered set instead.

Another possible problem is you may have the speaker settings setup wrong. If sound only comes out of the rear connector, go to Control Panel, Multimedia, Playback, Advanced Properties and see if the type of speakers you have are selected. This may get the regular speaker jack to work if it was not selected correctly for your speakers.

Another thing to try is Start> Run> type in dxdiag and press Enter. Do all of the sound checks with that tool to narrow down where the problem may be.

if none of this does not help and reloading the sound drivers does not also, get the seller to send the audio card to you and ask for the drivers for it also but you can find those online if he doesn't have the original disk.

Thanks Fruss, that helps to explain yesterday completely! I have prong marks on the sides of my mouth from the fork...never had that problem before with my "other left!"

You must be the very reason I must go to lawn and garage sales to find any of the last remaining 'pointy' forks... :(

Go ahead and check what the forks sold at Wally-World et-al look like nowadays! You can no longer 'pick' your food and lift it to your mouth anymore, but now only push it around the plate or frying pan..

It's getting to the point if you can't eat peas with a butter knife, it's because they don't want you too stressed out at balancing the peas in a hurry in case you might injure an innocent bystander...

I mean,, really... ;) :D
