I've been reading about others who are haveing trouble keeping their system running, but my problem is just the opposite... it won't shut down.

I just finished bulding my first computer from scratch last night. I must have turned the thing on and off a hundred times while installing each of the parts, but as I was putting the case cover back on and getting ready to head to bed, I shut down Windows and after going thru the familiar shut down sequence it STARTED ITSELF back up! I went into the windows settings to see if there was something I may have clicked to make it do this, but after trying to shut it down about 10 times, it would continue to restart itself. Wierd. I turned off the power supply on the back and turned it back on, which let the system stay off, but this is not a resonable work around. Afterwards, I turned the system on and continued to have the same problem.
The only thing I can think of is the 10/100 Lan card that I installed and am using to connect to a cable modem... but I don't even know where to start troubleshooting there.
It seems to me it is a Bios issue or something outside windows. All I know for sure is that I am clueless and would greatly appreciate your suggestions.

Hey Butter,

I used to have this problem with a DELL machine, it was simple in the end - Wake On Lan (WOL sometimes WOR) was set to be on (in the BIOS) and as it was plugged into the network, it would wake up straight after being turned off.

Go into the BIOS and turn Wake On Lan off... psot again if that doesn't help! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Greetings Buttermaker: from someone from a land of butter.

I once had this Pentium 200 MMX (I think it was a Silicon) crate (a very raw, uncased machine) which had two power switches: one on the power supply and push one on the front. For the machine to run correctly, the back rocker switch had to be on and the momentary action one at the front had to be pushed once.
Unfortunatly the guts of the puch switch where ripped out, so it would not operate normally. The solution? Replace it? Why bother?!? I merely left it as is and turned it on with a screwdriver shorting the switch points. Eventuly I discovered that all you needed to do was to touch the right points with a conveniant finger, sometimes before you plugged it up.

The lesson here? If your machine is turned on by a mobo pulse small shorts on your switch can cause your machine to turn on. Like Slyvor said, LAN WAKE could could do it to but in my experance it invloves a jumper being on and a special cable being put from you network card to your mobo.

(to tell the differance between mobo pulse switch and a direct mains switch, see how electrocuted you get when you short out the points of your switch with your hands http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif:mad http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
