Help,
I've purchased and installed a new Maxtor 40GB HD and controller card and installed everything (after a few "challenges").
After formatting the new drive I'm able to boot up, and go through the installation process for Win 98. The first couple of times I encountered errors during the installation process saying that certain files couldn't be installed (I removed the LAN card after the first couple of times).
After the install I noticed that there were device conflicts between the Lan card and the mobo IDE controller driver. I corrected the conflicts (so I thought) and removed the LAN card for future installs. I run into problems though after re-installing the LAN card after successful Win 98 installs when installing other software like IE 5.5, Netscape communicator 4.79, Office 2000 Prem edition. When I try to install these they either crash the system, or I get "insufficient memory in the Temp folder" errors(for netscape and IE)even if I've cleared it out....and I've received the odd XMS memory error.
I've tried re-formatting and re-installing Win 98 about 7 times with no success (I seem to have some success without the lan card installed). I've even tried installing Win XP, but that tells me that certain files cannot be installed (the Lan card was in).
Any suggestions? Could this be a bios setting issue (I've been through each setting 5 times so I don't think so), or should I just buy a new mobo and processor that don't require a controller card for a 40GB HD?
