i build a computer using a 8.4gb western digital hd , asus p2lb slot 1 mainboard, modem and sound card , intel 300mhz cpu 128 mb memory. at first when i was trying to load the OS WIN ME a lot of blue screens appeared with different error codes. whenever i restarted or hit the enter hey to continue bootin a new blue screen witn a different erros appeared. someone told me that this could be a memory problem. i changed the memory and the i was able to load and use the computer for 5 months. this week it apparently got infested with a virus. i erased the hd with an utility from wd that writes 0 and 1 to the disc. i partitioned and formated the disc and started to load the OS. but when the process is about to finish a lot of errors start to appear again and a lot of blue screens with different codes appear. like the first time i had problems with the computer , so i tried a new memory and was able to finish installing win me. i got the screen with all the icons but when i tried to acces my MY COMPUTER there is nothing there!!!!!also there is nothing when i hit the star button . the images on the screen stays depressed but no programs accessories , nothin appears.
i know i have to re-install the OS but want to know if anyone have any idea what is going on? I very much doubt that a perfectly working memory turns out defective all of a sudden. besides the memory works ok in a different computer
any help would be appreciated.(note when the computer got the virus one of the messages stated that i needed to reinstall windows , after that an image consisiting of various small smilling faces appeared on the screen and there was nothing more to do the screen froze).
THAN YOU VERY MUCH

Take the memory out and check the memory slot for any defects. You havent entered the bios and tweaked any memory settings? Or have the processor overclocked? Other than that you may need to wait untill better qualified people give suggestions.

i was had similar problems while installing either 98/ME on an older PC i have laying around the house ( K6-2 ). I tried it with a known good 4.3 GB drive and an older 1.2 GB drive and kept getting blue screens whenever i would attempt to install Windows. However, no matter how many diagnostics i ran, and different memory sticks i swapped, it would never completely install any OS without blue screening on me.

Finally, nearly at my wits end, i just happen to have the case off one day, and watched in amazement as the cpu fan shut off! It turns out that the 2 pin fan connector to the motherboard had gotten broken just enough that it only made intermittent contact, so once i replaced it with a good fan/connector-the cpu no longer overheated and the system ran like a top-i was able to install either OS without a hitch.

Short of it is; check to see if you are having the same cpu fan/heatsink problem, you might even want to replace them just to be on the safe side.

THANK YOUA LOT

i checked the memory slots and appear to be ok. i have not touched the bios, nor i have overclocked the cpu. i checked for cpu -fan problems they work ok. I remember that before , the memory stick apearred to be out of the slot (it got loose).
Does it make any difference if i put my sole memory stick in a different slot not the first one? or do i have to use dimm 0 for that? I have a hunch that even though the locks on dimm 0 appears ok and holds the memory tight ,they eventually are unable to hold the stick and it gets loose
any further suggestion will be appreciated
thank you

Try the memory in different slots.
If that does not work and you feel that the memory modules are working loose from the slots over time, then it may be time for a new MB.
