Ordered a replacement for a sony laptop and made sure it was compatible so no worries there... but what is the trick for getting the old one out? Do I have to boot the computer up release the tray and do something there or what?
Taking out all visible screws didn't do it. I would appreciate some input. I am sure it is something simple. Thanks for your time!

Don't even think about turning it on and trying to pull the drive Rich.
It may well be there are other screws beneath the base cover.
What model is it, as there will be a tech manual out there somewhere.

Have a look here (http://www.eserviceinfo.com/index.php?what=search2) Rich.
It may not give you the exact model but it will be somewhere near.

on some laptops its not easy to find the way to open them (it took me weeks of trying to open my laptop before i figured it out by accident). try to gently pry up on the keyboard or bezel that has the power button on it. mine (compac prisario 715us) was the power button.
