I recently formated my hard drive and when I tried to install windows back into my computer everything worked fine the software installed correctly but when restarted itself to finish the installation during the booting I got this message

While initializing device IOS: Windows protection error. You need to restart the computer

But when I restart the computer I got the same message, so I never get into windows what can I do? Thanks in advance...

Other than following all the steps in that MSKB article the only other thing I can think of that might help is to start the installation process all over again...

To tell you the truth I didn't understand that very well the part I understand was where it says to check for stuff that you recently installed into the machine and I also looked into the bootlog.txt file and I couldn't find anything wrong with it. Could you tell me what to look for into that file IOS.log because I don't have anything in my computer the hard drive is empty (well it has only the files that windows installed there when I tried to install it) Thanks again.

Well then if you don't have any other software installed yet it may be easier to start over, and make sure you have any drivers in case Windows needs them. Becasue it looks like either one of you devices did not install correctly or you just have a bad install...

If this is an old hard drive which you have re-formatted, did you fdisk /mbr? It sounds to me like you may have an old master boot record which needs to be rebuilt/replaced with a new copy.

Yeap I did some partitions to my hard drive.
How do I do that????

put boot disk in A: turn on computer, allow boot to finish. Type fdisk /mbr at the A prompt. I usually repeat this two or three times.
Then simply type sys c:. This will copy the command com, IO.sys and msdos.sys files back to the mbr (track 0 sector 0). I repeat the fdisk /mbr simply because I have had it fail to remove the old copy after only one attempt. Good luck!

The word SUCCESS in "DEVICEINITSUCCESS" is what you need.
The word FAIL in "DEVICEINITFAIL" is what you don't want and probably have.
You could use the "Find" facility to look for the word "Fail" or " IOS" [thats "(space)IOS"].

The process probably failed because one of that list of drivers that IOS has the job of loading could not be loaded.

Boot into safe mode to study the file.
See if "c:\Windows\System\VMM32\Ios.vxd" exists.

I can only hope that later versions of Windows are similar.

The following instructions say that you can USE SAFE MODE to do the necessary work and that you DO NOT NEED TO BOOT INTO WINDOWS 95.

"Config.sys & "Autoexec.bat" are in "c:\".
Open "Windows Explorer" and "Choose" the c: drive [single or double click it depending upon how your system is configured]

I am slightly astonished that you cannot "Find" files.

TIP ONE
To "Find" any file:

A. Go to "Start>Find>Files or Folders" and in the "Look in" Drop-Down Box select the drive you wish to search [c: in this case].
B. In the "Named" Drop-Down Box enter characters which form a part of the name of the file. e.g.
1. If you use "Config" it will find all folders/files with this as part of the name [too big a list]. Use "Config.*" [that's an Asterisk after the dot] to find something with "Config." followed by any number of characters, e.g. "Config.xxxxxxxxxx....". In practice files only ever have 3 characters after the dot so you'll find things like "Config.old", "Config.sys", "Config.dos", "Config.~ys", but if there were files with more or less than this these would be presented also.

2. If you use "Config.???" [which is more specific since it is explicitly demanding only those files with three characters after the dot] you will be given the same files as above. If you ask for "Config.??" you would normally get nothing [unless you happened to have files with only two characters after the dot].

To edit the contents of the System Files [including "Config.sys" & "Autoexec.bat"]

A. Go to "Start>Run" and in the "Open" Drop-Down Box, type "sysedit" and click "ok". "System Configuration Editor" will open and you will see "Config.sys" & "Autoexec.bat" and others and all these can be edited here [that is why this was designed and made].

I have done that!! I formatted my hard drive and installed windows 95 again but I still get the same message.

About the files I don't know what is going on I can't follow your steps because I can't get into windows. I knew the files where suppost to be in c:\ but I can't find them.

Do you know how to Boot into Windows "Safe Mode"?

go to the website of the manufacturer of your hd , download and utility to erase it and try reinstalling windows from scratch

Reinstalling is not going to help, it's been done already and didn't help before so it's not going to make a difference this time.

Question: What CPU and speed are we dealing with here? The AMD K6-2/350 had a timing loop issue with win95 that would cause the same Windows Protection Error. Check AMD Patch (http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUServicePacks/AMDPatch/Default.asp) if you have the AMD K6-2/350 and WINDOWS 95 ONLY, not Win98.

To get to and deal with autoexec.bat and config.sys use a start up disk and do it in DOS. after booting to the start up disk type C: and press [Enter] to change to C drive. Type edit_autoexec.bat using a space in place of the underscore used here. That should open the DOS editor and allow you to modify autoexec.bat. [Alt] [F] [S] will save changes, [Alt] [F] [X] will exit the editor.

Then type edit_config.sys to modify the config.sys file.

Reboot and try it after making changes. You should also be able to boot into Safe Mode and make modifications that way, use the [F8] key during the boot process after the first screen, it should display a boot menu. then click Start\Run and type sysedit, both files should open in that window.

Did you install any new hardware to your PC before you did the formating? I got that message before when I add a new harddisk and ram into my PC before.

When you install your window, does it finish install without any error? I remember my first install of window, an error occured and it continues the installation. It also give me that same error.

The file that is suppost to fix the issue that windows has with AMD processors doesn't work in a DOS enviroment so I can't fix it since I can't get into windows....

About the windows intallation it goes normally it doesn't give any errors until the programs finishes and restarts itself.
