View Full Version : Ext. CD Burner (USB) Underbuffer Errors

This is so annoying, for some reason I can only write data cd's and not audio cd's (cause the laser needs to make multiple tracks). When i attempt to write an audio cd, it writes the fist track, attempts to write the 2nd and then stops as it has an underbuffer.
I have tried writting at slower speeds, defraging my HDD, and still I cannot get it to write.
Any suggestions.

Thanks http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Try writing even slower and/or writing to the hard-drive first then to the disk. Are you using a copy utility or the data program?

Try this (http://www.musicmatch.com/r.htm?redirect=/download/free/%3fos%3dpc%26mode%3dinput&source=homepage_basic_link) for free.

So far as I read on these boards and others that Nero burning software is better than EZCD if you can get a hold of one. Good luck to you.

I dont think Nero supports ext. burners on USB - which sucks as i use Nero on other machines at home.
I mean does it as i am quite sure it doesnt? and i do dislike EZCDC

Hello ausieolie2

If i've got this right you have an external CD-R[w?] and you are getting "Buffer Under-Runs". This is where the CD burner needs a constant flow of data with not a single momentary pause. To achieve this the data is usually supplied to a RAM memory "buffer" [a sort of reservoir or store]built in to the drive itself [my Hewlett Packard has 4MB]and the amount in this store can fluctuate but must not fall to zero%. Mine often falls to say 80% and the levels are constantly displayed by the software. An internal drive has the normal very high throughput multi-connector cables which external drives usually cannot equal. USB connections make a serious attempt to match this [but don't succeed I believe, could be wrong]. I can't remember from memory what the figures are. It's a bit like having a little single lane road joining two great cities and hoping to cope with the traffic flow during the peak period. Even with a big buffer at the drive end and fast supply of data at the PC end it might not work. I wonder what others think on the topic?

What kind of cable connection do you have?

Hey thanks, http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Yes i am using an external USB HP CDRW writer (i am not sure of the exact cable - but it is USB). I am running Windoze 98, 100Mhz 192mb RAM, my buffer drops to about 80% and then skips the entire set of tracks. Then it will display underbuffers. Does anybody know of any other CD creation software that supports Ext. USB REWRITERS?

Thanks for ur help, http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'm using an Acer USB CD-RW with Prassi PrimoCD Plus 2.0 and have had no problems. HERE'S (http://www.winplanet.com/winplanet/reviews/2514/3/) a blurb on it. It came with the Acer.

I'm not sure I understand your last post. Are you using a 100Mhz processor?

Hey,
Thanks for your reply. I am running an 800Mhz Celeron. My ram is 196mb. I have written at the slowest speed, defraged my HDD, and written from HDD to CD and still I get underbuffer errors arghhh http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif

I will take a look at that software.

Any other suggestions on what i should do? (anyone).

Thanks http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hi

Just happened to be looking for threads about CD-ROMS (my next post will explain) and I saw this thread, which seems to have just stopped dead... if you are still having problems then email me, I have a couple of external CDRWS running over USB, using Adaptec EZCD, I never have a problem. (One is Mitsumi, the other HP)

 I have an older type burner 2x 4x 20x and am getting write errors and buffer underrun. After using different programs and dismantling the burner, I have come to the conclusion that the laser has an intermittant fault and as it is an electronic problem I can't fix and will have to buy a new one when I can.
