View Full Version : No internet-related program works

Suddenly all my internet-related programs close down and don't work. I receive different kinds of error messages:
*Unable to start e-mail protection. Pleasure ensure that TCP/IP is installed and that Port 110 is avilable.
*The MSVCIRT.DLL file is linked to missing MSVCRT.DLL.
(There are many of these files on my computer, so I can't tell which is missing.)
*Could not create socket.

It's pretty obvious what kind of problem this is, but I don't know how to fix it. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Rita

Rename any "MSVCRT.DLL" files you find. Then reinstall the programs which are giving you that error.

I belive this is one of those VB "run-time" files that sometimes can be replaced by reinstalling the "run-time" libraries. However if you have a bunch of those files already that may not work. That's why I suggest renaming them first.

Thanks for the suggestion. I suspect that the problem lies elsewhere, but I'll try what you say and will post the results. I've spent almost three hours on the phone in several different calls with the support desk of the computer manufacturer. They were very nice and we tried many things, but they ended up suggesting that I reformat the disk... which I would like to avoid, of course.

If you haven't sorted the problem by the above advice please post back with more info. Specifically which OS and IE versions and which av and/or firewall are you using? You also say all internet related programs do this - but a few examples would be informative.

Well, I did reinstall a few of the programs, but the results were the same, they continue either to close down immediately or to give me error messages like the one in my first posting. I am using Windows 98, and some of the programs that don't work are Internet Explorer 5 and 6, Outlook Express 5 and 6, Norton AntiVirus E-mail protection, my cable modem (the modem is working but nothing seems to reach the computer), my dial up connection (answers but doesn't connect)...

Any and all suggestions are welcome. I'll try them all since my only other option is reformatting, not a pleasant prospect.

Sometimes trying to find a solution to a problem can use up more time than reformatting and reinstalling.

Afraid its not obvious to me.

(1) Could be the networking is setup wrong, in which case you could delete all the settings and set them up again.

(2) NAV's eMail protection may have been put out of sync if you subsequently installed/uninstalled IE/OE, which it seems that you have since you mention versions 5 and 6.

(3) IE/OE 6 can create problems once they have been upgraded-to that can often only be resolved by first eradicating IE with special software and then reinstalling.

(4) Your registry may be corrupted, which would almost certainly mean a reformat and clean install.

Where do you think the problem lies??

My guess is that has something lto do with corrupted or overwritten communication files. Everything had been working fine until, suddenly, it wasn't, and I can't recall what I did, if anything to cause the problem. IE 6.0 was installed some months ago and had no particular problems. Networking also was working well.

Still hopeful...

Have you tried running SFC (system file checker)? If not go to RUN and type in SFC. This will show (or at tleast it should) show any corrupted files. It will also show ALL changed files. You will be given the choice of re-inserting the changed files or accepting them. If files are found to be corrupt you will be promted to replace them, so keep you Win98 CD beside you

Ps. If you have never run SFC before it might take you a while but do not be tempted to skip any files. Check each one individually

Yup, I ran SFC, but it didn't find anything even though I had it check all the files listed. This was disappointing since I had hoped it would turn up a corrupted or changed file. While I was at it, I also reinstalled all the network and TCP/IP related files.

Thanks for your good suggestion. I'm still hopeful,...
