I just helped a friend build a new system. When I first booted I got the following error: "CMOS Checksum error - Defaults Loaded." Additionally, it said this: Main Processor AMD Athlon 1248MHz. I know this is incorrect as the chip is an XP 1800+. I tried adjusting the BIOS and the system shut down. I was unable to reboot even though I moved the jumper on that little CMOS thingy. Then I tried taking out the battery and reinstalling it. That worked to some extent. The error went away and Windows XP opened with the CD drive. The hdd formatted ok but then I got what sounds like a killer error: "CPU is unworkable or has been changed. Please recheck CPU Soft Menu. I hit enter and Windows continued to load." That's where I am now. HELP PLEASE!!!
(I meant "unworkable" not "unwokable." At least I hope I didn't cook the cpu).

I checked in Google and foud the following message. Could this have happened when I tried to make the BIOS read more than "1500+" How can I correct it?
Q. When I turn on my computer, I receive the following message: "CPU is unworkable or has been changed. Please recheck CPU SOFT MENU. Press F1 to continue." Sometimes it will go on and I can continue or I get the following: "There is not enough memory or registry problem. Restore from backup." I have uninstalled Microsoft Home Essentials 97 and reinstalled it. I cannot close this box except by shutting down.
A. The message is one that you will see when a CPU has been overclocked, which is increasing the clock rate of a processor beyond its rating to increase system speed beyond the manufacturer's recommended specification. The correct technical terms are speed-margining or undertiming. This is done in one of two ways: changing clock oscillator module or changing jumper settings. I would check with whoever sold you your computer for an explanation.

Look on the BIOS page where you set the FSB and Vcore voltages. Disable "Speed error hold". Then save the changes and reboot. If this does not work you might need a Bios update?

Thanks. As soon as I get hom I'll check speed error hold. A Bios error may be it. The CPU is Athlon XP 2000+ (sorry, I posted it wrong the 1st time) and the BIOS list only goes up to 1900+. How do I update the BIOS?

The XP2000+ uses a default multiplier of 12.5 and Bus Speed
of 133. 1666Mhz. Current BIOS isn't recognizing this as it is compatable
thru the XP1900+ series chips. 1600Mhz. (up thru 12X and 133)
When you power on BIOS is confused about the processor so it
sets itself to 100 Bus Speed. Now you have a 12.5 X 100 = 1250
and the system can boot up.
If you will go to the Motherboard Mfg's website and browse for
your particular board you will find BIOS upgrades, etc. There you
will find information on how to do a BIOS Flash for the latest BIOS.
Luck.

Bios flash worked, thanks. It took awhile, though. The only was I could get DOS to work in XP was to download something called Dr.Bios.
