View Full Version : Problematic Processors (Dual Xeons)

Tried installing (2) PII Xeon 450 2mb cache processors in my Dell Precision 610 workstation, won't get to BIOS. My monitor light turns green shortly after power on, however the next 'keyboard light' booting sequence fails. and I'm left at a blank screen, no error beeps. processors boot sucessfully individually with a terminator card.
I researched a VRM for the motherboard but have not come accross anything that says it's required.
Any insight or suggestions to this dilema would be greatly appreciated!
Not sure about your board, but most often when going dual the processors should be matched (stepping too), although some motherboards will support dual processors that are not exact matches. Also make sure that everything is properly jumpered. You may have to boot with one processor, enter the BIOS enable support for the dual configuration, power down then insert the other processor.

Thanks for your input mjc.
The Processors are in same step. I looked in my BIOS before for such a setting, but I couldn't find anything. I tried setting my processro speed to "compatible" but to no avail.
Could it be that running dual processors does require the Registered ECC ram? Dell has a little RAM chart on their docs.dell website.
I'll check into jumper settings further... will post then.

yes..some boards that can use ECC registered RAM do require it for dualies. If you have a stick around give it a try (you don't really need a large amount just to test, but it is worth checking out). Also check each processor indiviually.

The Intel PII Xeon board used a VRM
and the PIII Xeon board (OR840) didn't
require one as it is 100Mhz FSB.
Also, on the OR840, each memory slot has
to be occupied.
Luck.
