A friend has a Toshiba laptop running Windows 3.11 and DOS of course. On a cold boot it fails to go through the proper routine as it does not read the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. However if I to a warm boot from that C: it boots normally. The BIOS is set to boot FDD/HDD as it should be. Why does it not seem to read the AUTOEXEC.BAT from a cold boot? I have forgotten a little of the DOS language I guess but the .BAT looks right to me.

It's been a long time since I messed with DOS, but did you take a look at the config.sys file. I think this loads prior to autoexec.bat on cold bootup.

Does it do this on both battery and AC?

Have you run chkdsk on it?

Could be a problem with the hard drive...

Johno and MJC, thanks for the reply. I looked in the Config.sys and was unable to see anything that appeared to be out of the ordinary. Although I may not really be sure what I was supposed to be looking for.
I was running it on AC power at the time the other day when I did this and I have not run a chkdsk as yet. I guess I can try that and see if there is some sort of error. I suspected the HD also but I do not really make the connection based on my understanding of the boot process. This is odd. I will get back to you on this again after the chkdsk.
