Hi! I've had my kodak easyshare dx7440 digital camera for over a year now and I have always connected to my computer and transfered pictures just fine. Now the other day I went to connect it to my USB port, turned the camera on, and nothing happened, normally I see it as another drive and a box comes up saying "retreiving device contents..." I've tried re-installing the easyshare software that came with my pc, restoring the computer, running the repair thing on the software, and reading and re-reading thru the kodak support site, all with no success. Also I went into the properties of "My Computer" and it is not listed under the USB drive there, but it is listed under "Imaging Devices" and it says that it is being powered by the USB. I'm really confused as to whats going on, and I really really need my pictures on my pc!!! Any other ideas?
I use Windows ME by the way. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the PC Guide Forums!! :D
I use Windows ME by the way.Oooh, I'm so sorry! :(
Have you made any changes to your system lately? Installed/uninstalled any new programs or added/removed any hardware or devices? If you didn't make any changes, then something else did. And that something else is probably a virus or other piece of malware/spyware/adware. How up-to-date are you in the scanning department of your system?

If your camera has a removable memory card have you thought about using a card reader? By doing this you do not need to install any type of camera software.
This is the method I use to view and grab photos from my camera.

Check your usb controllers in Device Manager. If there is issues, uninstall them from there, then reinstall usb drivers or XP's SP-2 drivers again.
As Ernie says, even if you don't have a memory card, with the camera hooked to the usb ports, you should be able to see it without the camera software. I don't use any for mine anymore and just copy or cut and paste the pics I want to save, then delete or format the camera's memory or card.
The software from the camera is more for little programs like making SVD's or autodetecting and downloading the pics and such anyway. More bloat IMO.

Thank you guys so much for replying!
I haven't made any changes to my system recently and my anti-virus is up-to-date.
Being that the computer doesn't recognize my camera as being another drive, could that mean that its not my camera/software that is the problem, but my usb port? Because I'm going to look into getting a card reader, I don't like the software that came with my camera, but if its my usb then the card reader won't help either, right?
"Check your usb controllers in Device Manager. If there is issues, uninstall them from there, then reinstall usb drivers or XP's SP-2 drivers again."
How will I be able to tell if there are issues with my usb controllers? Is it safe to just uninstall them and reinstall the drivers, or would I possibly mess up my pc more?
Thanks again!

If there's a problem with usb drivers, there will be a "!" next to them after you expand the + sign next to usb controllers.
Are you running XP? Does your mobo support usb2? If so on both, installing SP2 for XP will install the usb2 drivers and you're done. If not, you'll need usb drivers which may be on the disk that came with your camera. Put it in a drive and cancel autoplay, then right click and Explore. You can then browse for the drivers you need and not install the other software you find as a waste.
