View Full Version : Himem.sys detects unrealiable??????

Hello all, i have a computer problem well actually someelse does , but guess what they bring it to me....
Well i have Windows 98, and it involves DOS and you know i hate Dos so...

I try to boot it up, i get to the GUI and then it says error reading drive c:/ abory/retry ........
So I go into to safemode, or try any way and i get another error messageHimem.sys has detected unrealiable XMS memory at 1000e9 XMS driver not installed .. So i know some all know dos well , can you lead me to a good solution...Calling MJC

Well, this one sure sounds like it is in serious trouble.

Before you spend too much time on it try running a virus scan...if you have an emergency disk froma scanner use it or you might try and find a copy of F-prot (a DOS scanner...it doesn't fit on a floppy in expanded form anymore so you will have to unpack it on the questionalbe system and then run it).

If that comes up clean the grab the hard drive diagnostics from the drive manufacturer's website and give them a spin.

If they come up clean then swap out the RAM...

If all else fails, wipe the drive and reinstall because there would be too many corrupted files to try and fix.....

If it isn't viral in nature then you are probably looking at some new RAM and maybe a new hard drive.
