For some reason my computer keeps locking up. Ctrl-alt-del doesn't work so i have to use the reset button. I have win 98, I dont know if that makes any difference, any ideas on the cause of this problem?

Sure..heat, dust, RAM, bad PS, new hardware/software, a poltergeist. Sorry, couldn't resist, iandredd . Seriously, we need some more info. Okay, you have 98, but have you recently installed anything? Was puter working properly before now, or is this a new (at least to you) puter? Does it lock on everything..or just browsing? Or just burning a CD, or just when you open a certain program, or what? System specs would be helpful too. Please give us some more info.

Press reset button. While your computer restarts hold down the CTRL key or watch the on-screen messages, when you see the line Starting Windows press the F8 key. You'll be presented with a Windows 98 Startup Menu. Select 3 Safe mode from the menu and press enter. Exit Windows by clicking the Start button and selecting Shut down. When the Shut Down Windows dialog box appears, select the Restart option. Some problems are fixed by simply restarting your computer.
If Windows won't start in Safe mode, you need to insert your Windows Startup disk and restart your computer from your A:\ drive. The Windows Startup disk lets you start your Computer and re-install the operating system.
You might also want to examine the various configuration settings under Control Panel/System/Device Manager.
Hope that helps. If not let us know and someone is bound to come up with a better idea. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

As Kay probed...would be helpful to know what was going on when the problem initiated. So, difficult to speculate what causes this.
However, I would suggest a Bootdisk and you want to select the option to get you to a DOS prompt A: type in scanreg_/restore where the underscore (_) represents a single space.
You will be given options to try a previously good registry...select one of the previous dates and follow the directions to exit. Be sure to remove the Bootdisk before the reboot.
