Hi again, it’s me LG. I have taken the hard drive out, very carefully. It is a WD Caviar 64AA. Parameters, 13328 cyl 15 heads 63 spl 6448.6 MB (ya’ll can now explain all that to me)
Now, with everything we already know about the bomb, should I get a new HDD or find a refurbished one? I hate to think of putting a nice new HDD in this thing. I’ve done a google and have come up with several places that offer the refurbished ones at decent prices. Would it pay in the long run tho to get a new one and not chance having to replace the refurbished one 90 days down the road? Should I get the same brand?
How long should a HDD last? Why on earth has this bomb had to have, now, three of them in the last 4 years? Is that normal? Could there be something else causing them to go bad like this or are they just bad drives? I don’t know what the other one was, I’m just assuming it was an IBM that would have been in the machine originally. What ever it was it didn’t even last a year. Any comments, suggestions, help, are welcome!!!

Well, WD stands for Western Digital which is a very well known HDD manufacturer. The Caviar sounds to me like WD is eggspecially proud of the design! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif However, with 3 bombing in 4 years, they're not as eggceptional as they're making them out to be. And, that's the truth, no yolk!

HDDs are rather inexpensive these days. I would suggest going new. Check PRICEWATCH (http://www.pricewatch.com) for starts.

I'm going to close this topic, let's keep it in the one already going concerning this machine. If it gets too long again, then another one can be created, but since it's the same computer and same problem, it can stay in the same topic.

I'll do some looking and see what I can come up with for the Cyl/Hd/Sct question.
