Hey all,
I have a quick question. In MSI's Motherboard manual it sais to press down firmly on the processor once you drop it into the socket, then press the lever down to lock it. But i've read elsewhere to just drop the processor into the socket and NOT to apply any pressure to the processor or you will risk bending the CPU pins. Which should i do?
BTW- This is for a AMD 939 CPU.

I don't know about AMD chips, but modern Intel CPUs are what's call ZIF (zero insertion force). You line it up, you set it down carefully, you lower the lever--now there is some force required there :p
An AMD type will have to tell you about those CPUs.

Any amd techies on here that could help me out? I just want to do it the right way without damaging my processor.

ZIF type sockets have existed for some time now. You shouldn't need any pressure to put a modern CPU into its socket. Like pop pop said, just drop it in and push the lever down. You'll know if it's not in the socket all the way, because it won't be sunk into the socket all the way. Last time I had to push down on a CPU was when the pins were bent - old K6-2 anyway. ;)
Ah well, pins bend, just bend them back. At least, that's what I do for older CPU's. Hehe.

Does anyone here have a MSI 939 board? If so could you tell me if MSI boards come with a ZIF socket or not. In the manual no where does it say it has a ZIF socket.

Motherboard manufacturers have been using ZIF sockets in PC's for their CPU's since the mid 90's.

All recently manufactured motherboards for a socket type processor have ZIF sockets.
MSI's Motherboard manual is saying to press down firmly after the processor is in the socket and while you are locking the lever.
The reason for pressing down is to keep the processor from raising up and leaving a gap between the bottom of the processor and the top of the socket.
If the processor is properly inserted (without using force) into the socket there isn't any chance of bending the pins.
If you don't press down on the processor and it raises up when you lock the lever, when you install the heat sink fan it will force the CPU back down into the socket possibly bending the pins on the CPU or damaging the socket maybe both
Be sure to clean the fingerprint off the top of your CPU with alcohol before applying thermal compound or installing the HSF with a thermal pad.

I have a MSI board with the 939 socket. Just drop and lever.

This is from the manual for the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum socket 939 motherboard.
