OK that lead me to more questions.
Does that mean that SATA II is the same as SATA 3.0Gb/s ?
If I have a mobo that supports SATA II is backward compatible with SATA I ?

Dispelling the Confusion: SATA II does not mean 3.0Gb/s (http://www.sata-io.org/namingguidelines.asp)
Backward compatability - yes you can install the earlier version on the new but won't be able to utilize all of the newer features. See this discussion also:

I'm sure saphalline can go more into detail than I could and there may be other threads discussing this, but I only remember these two off the top of my head without going through the search routine.

Again, Thanks Poppy
While doing some research on SATA I came across this web site with a write up on things not to do concerning SATA. This is the page:
http://www.ata-atapi.com/sata.htm This article seems to be kinda old. I wonder
have these problems been addressed??

Wow, that link looks like a big rant for people who hate SATA! :D They've got issues... :p
What they're saying is partially true. Or at least it was in 2003. But you're essentially correct - these "problems" have been fixed.
Did SATA have a rough start? No. Did SATA have a confusing start? Yes. A lot of that confusion was glossed over during the adoption period to just get people using SATA. Now that SATA is here to stay (and those "problems" have been solved) it's a much better situation. I love SATA, just like most new interfaces, because it's simpler than what we had before. And more expansive. My buddy Orion here has the Asus A8N SLI Deluxe mobo, and he can fit 8 SATA drives in his computer! Naturally he hasn't nearly used them all up yet, but having the expansion for that many drives built into the mobo without paying $300+ wasn't even possible before SATA. And of course that's just SATA - he also has room for 4 PATA drives. So without adding any controller cards, that's a total of 12 drives connected directly to the mobo, at full speed. That's a lot of bandwidth!
Me personally, I like SATA. If you want me to explain the specs in detail again, I can do that. Just ask.

If you have more to add to this thread: http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthrea...0936#post250936
I am always willing to learn more. Or, at least try to grasp more.
Thanks Saphalline
BTW I will be posting a new project. Could you please check my choices for compatibility. I think everything should be ok.
I had to put my first project on hold due to financial priorities.
Just thought you would like to know what all this is about. I am enrolled in an online PC repair course and I have a research project that involves building a virtual PC. I am supposed to gather components and prices, then explain how to put it all together. So, I thought I would actually go ahead and build a PC to gain hands-on experiance.
With xmas coming soon and due to other financial priorities, I would go ahead with a low budget system as a xmas gift for my daughter who is in her early teens.
I know yadda yadda yadda.
Thanks for all your help, Saphalline and Poppy.

We've had numerous SATA-related threads over the last few months. Here are a few of them:
Discussion (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=39930) of SATA features.
Dispelling (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=38202) SATA myths.
If you want to know more, I'll rewrite anything here. And then I'll add some flags for the search engine. ;)
SATA 1.0 2.0 3G spec specification
There, that ought to do it. :D
