I am planning to install an additional hard disk of 40 GB or 80 GB. I would like to know whether I need to reformat my system and re-do the partitioning. Or can I install the additional HD without disturbing the system?

No need to do anything, except partition/format the new drive. It should be recgonised as drive "d".

Depending on the age/size of your current drive, it might pay to make the new drive tha master. You could use the HDD manufacturers utility/setup software to partition and format the drive and transfer the data from the old to the new drive.

The install the new drive where the old drive was and the old drive as the slave on the secondary IDE controller.

Also, with Windows 2000 or XP you can make the drive letter anything you want it to be.

HI, Many thanks for your reply. But I already have 'D' drive. For information, I have partitioned my existing HD as C, D and E. My system runs on WinXP-Pro(SP-2) and it is just 7 months old.
