Hey guys,

I am going crazy! I have a Maxtor 200GB external HD. Everything worked great and has for about 10 months now, I was cleaning up drives last night and defregmenting them. After doing so, I continue to get an I/O device error when I try to access it. Actually, it kind of went in stages. I could access it to see what was in the drive for a while but could not use anything in the drive or add to the drive. Now after re-booting, I just get the I/O device error. I don't have another machine to try this HD on. When I unplug it from the CPU, it doesn't show up any longer and when I plug it back in it shows up. Not sure what is not working. I am using XP. Please, does anyone know any good answers? I have 130GB of music on that drive I would hate to lose.

Thanks

Jeremy

Put it into the PC and use the Diagnostic software on the HDD manufacturers web site to test it.

I tried it on another PC however I still have the same problem. Does this mean it is toast? Should I put a fork in it? I am puzzled because when I plug it in to the PC all of the serial # and that type of information shows up- but no files.

UNTIL YOU DO WHAT IS ASKED WE CANT HELP YOU!!

Each time you try to access the drive you may be limiting your chance of recovering any data.

Test the drive, report the results and then we may be able to help get the data off.
