Hi folks,
My BIOS setting for the FSB is at 200MHZ with a 9x multiplier giving me the correct CPU setting of 1800MHZ. I was under the impression that the FSB would be set at 800MHZ but, I have read alot of info, particularly from this thread: http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=37196&highlight=cpu+speed
and concluded the reason for the FSB setting of 200MHZ is due to my ram operating at 200MHZ
My question; Is this correct or am I missing something?

SYSTEM SPECS:

AMD Sempron 64 3000+ Palermo 800MHz FSB Socket 754 Processor Model SDA3000BXBOX

ABIT NV8 Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce4-4X ATX AMD Motherboard Model #: NV8

CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model VS1GBKIT400

Thanks in advance :)

Read that thread again. The Sempron 64 is based on AMD's K8 microarchitecture. It has no FSB. It just has a HyperTransport Link.

The speed of the HT Link for Socket 754 CPU's is usually 800MHz. But this is a QDR bus, meaning that it operates at a clock frequency of 200MHz and delivers 4 bits per clock giving it an effective speed of 800MHz. So the HT Link speed you are seeing is correct. That's the clock speed, whereas 800MHz is more or less the implied clock speed based on the QDR applied to the bus.

Now with the K8's onboard memory controller, the HT Link has no bearing on the speed of the RAM. The two busses are completely separate - the speed of both is controlled independently for the most part. So you can set your HT Link to 150MHz or 300MHz and it wouldn't affect how fast your RAM is. It would just mess with the CPU-to-RAM ratios, but uh... that gets confusing...

I guess all you really need to know is that the new system is working just as it should be. :D

Or, for even more fun, check out AMD's CPU's based on their new K8 core architecture, which features a built-in memory controller! What's the FSB speed for those? Core speed. Oftentimes reported simply as "built-in" (actually there is no FSB because the memory controller is already part of the CPU). You have no idea how many confused souls have been pouring in lately looking for answers to that one!

Man, did I miss that or what! Yeah it is working, but, I would like to know the how and why's.
Guess I didn't realize that it is a K8 core!
Thanks for letting me know to re-read that post! ;)
