Hi All,
Can anyone help please?

I have recently had my pc upgraded, new motherboard, more memory, etc because it completely fell over. It seems to be working ok, but it crashes rather alot (completely freezes so have to hit reset), particularly when I'm on the Internet. Recently I couldn't boot up at all - got a message about data protection error on drive C:\ and problems initializing VKD (whatever that is). I couldn't even boot into safe mode, and that worried me. However, I ran scandisk via dos and did a complete overhaul and a bad sector was created on the HD. I am now back up and running, and everything seems fine but am worried in case there is an impending hardware failure looming. I have been told that I should update the drivers on the video card as I am using Windows 98SE following the upgrade. I was originally using a lesser version of windows 98. Can anyone tell me if it is necessary to do this and why I would need to.

Any help gratefully appreciated

Many Thanks in advance

VXD are some time tricky to trace could be that you need to update the devise driver for the video card? It could also be the key board what concerns me is that you had a bad sector and it is a data error this could mean that the USER.DAT file is corrupted? MJC and a couple of others are more familiar with the registry could probobly nail this down, they should be on line here soon . lets see what they have to say

Ok Max, is the hard drive in this unit also new?

If it is I would see about seeking out a wrranty replacement, becaus new drives should not have bad sectors....

That being said, I think Yoda covered the first part....if the errors are relating to a vxd that relates to your video card then by all means update the drivers. Sound card drivers may also be a good update too.

Also boot into Safe Mode and look in Device Manager, if you see duplicated devices like three video cards or four hard drives remove the all but one (usually the last one in the list) and then reboot.
