I've just bought an Athlon 2200+ (thoroughbred) to upgrade my existing PC. The trouble is I bought it on-line on a bit of a whim and I'm not sure my motherboard can handle it.
The MB is an Epox 8kmm+. I've searched the net but cant find too much info on the board, although it does appear to support Athlon Xp's. I think it has a via kt266 chipset- is this compatable with the 2200?
thanks

I couldn't find any info on the MOBO at all. the closest on Epox's site is
EP-8KMM3I-X.
Are you sure of the model? you can run something like Belarc advisor or Everest to find the details if you are uncertain.

I've had some more luck searching under EP-8kmm+ but I'm still not 100% certain it is compatable.
I've checked and It has a via km266 chipset, if thats any help.

I found a link to your mobo here (http://www.ciao.co.uk/Productinformation/EPoX_EP_8KMM__5409941). It is Socket A, and therefore should do just fine with your new processor. Enjoy.

I found the link to your mobo on Epox here (http://www.epox.com.tw/eng/products_content.php?ps=120), which describes the CPU limitations. It maxes out at the Palomino 2000+, but there are more recent BIOS updates available. Unfortunately there's no description for those BIOS updates so I can't say anything for certain.
This one is a maybe.

Thanks for your replies.
Would it cause any damage to the MB or CPU if I put the 2200+ in to try it?
Cheers

Would it cause any damage to the MB or CPU if I put the 2200+ in to try it?Putting a T-bred into a mobo made only for Palmino's? Yeah, you could fry the mobo, the CPU, or both. My recommendation: don't try it! It's not worth it.

I have come across the following sites which suggest that the max cpu the board can handle is a 2200+.

Is it worth trying?

Hmmm... Model 8, huh? It might be worth a try. But just remember that there's a chance it will do harm.
