iTunes is the best way to do it, (and only way AFAIK).

yes, but i would like to use itunes as my last resort because with itunes i get to much eye candy and it also hogs system resources which i would like to use for other applications.
Depending on the how the Mini was setup at first.
You can use other programs. Including explorer to add files to it
BUT it has to be setup to do so.
If it was setup to use Itunes only then you have to change the format
I recall reading about using the Ipod for data backup .
I am not sure of where at the moment
When I find the link I will post here for you
But it can be done
To let Windows see the iPod as an external drive, check the Enable Disk Use box in the iTunes iPod preferences

I have a Philips mp3 player, and I have to used Itunes. It shows up as usb storage without the software, but it will not play the files unless they are put there by Itunes. Let me know if you find a way, I hate Itunes!
There are other programs that support Ipod'd BUT at a price
