I've dealt with this before, but I forget what causes it.

System's running Win98, and I'm using a USB mouse -- Intellimouse Optical, to be precise. I'm not certain why, but a USB mouse under Win98 doesn't read right... for instance... say I drag the mouse down and left, diagonally for a while. The mouse will move down-left, then twitch up-right. Then it rides almost straight upward for a bit, glitches down a nice jump, and finally figures out that it's moving down-left again.

Does anyone know what causes this, and more importantly, how to correct it?

Hi Snarfleez-
A few things come to mind. I also have an intellimouse optical. When I upgraded to XP, I had all kinds of problems. First, I downloaded the latest driver, which turned out to be incredibly buggy, so I went back to my original driver. Secondly, I found that it worked better in my ps-2 port than usb if it's available. Then-one time, I actually had a piece of lint stuck in a bad place if you can believe that! Finally, make sure your DMA is enabled- I had amazing problems with an erratic mouse when XP chose to disable my DMA. And there are various settings you can play with in your driver to see if that makes any difference. Last but not least, I just yesterday received a letter from M$, stating that "A limited number of MS intellimice" were experiencing problems" and that they would replace it if mine was one of them! Hope something here sends you in the right direction! Have a nice day http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

If any other USB devices are connected, then disconnect them.
If the mouse works properly, then you may need a powered USB hub.
