First things first. Ask the babysitter if (s)he did or caught the kids doing anything to the computer. Not that it would change anything anyway but might provide a clue as to failure or tampering.
W98:
Right click on My Computer, go to the bottom and click Properties. There will be tabs at the top of the new window and one will say Device Manager. Click it and at the top, the CD-Devices should have a plus sign next to it. Click it and tell us what you see at this point. It's the place to start anyway.
Point to ponder when you are a novice roaming around in a computer(pc), if you choose cancel or the 'x' at the top right of any page, it will not keep any changes you may have accidentally done while browsing around. NEVER hit OK or Apply if you are unsure of what you have done and I don't ever use either unless I WANT to make changes specifically.
Oh, by the way, Welcome to the http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif
