I am running an ABIT-BE6,PIII-450,128K with ME. Generally it worked OK however frequently I would get crashes... presume that is a software problem, but now I can't even boot up. Fan and lights OK but I get an undulating tone (Is that the system alarm?) What to do

From the description of your errors, I would be inclined to suspect a memory problem. It could be that one stick is loose in the socket.
Diagnosis: Award says that any beep patterns other than "one long followed by two short" are likely problems with the system memory. However, of late they have started adding other beep codes to their systems as well.
From "The PC Guide" http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/sys/beep/awardOther-c.html (http://http://)
Try removing and replacing the memory sticks, and check for any other possible loose connections. If this doesn't help, can you check the memory on another machine?

To no avail. I tried that and the memory stick is OK, tried another memory stick from a working computer...same problem. Tried another memory slot...no help. Checked my connections and all seem OK.

Could be a power supply going ..but usually when they go they go all the way, with no power at all..if ya have a fan on the processor, it should be running strong..not just spinning. Some bios's detect fan RMP and if the fan doesnt reach a given RPM it will hault the system from loading. if the inside of the case hasnt been blew free of dust bunnies in a while cant hurt to try that as well, could be slowing the fans down. if your positive none of the cables are loose or defective..and the above doesnt help it doesnt sound good.
Also you mentioned lots of errors then nothing..iwas wanting to add a hardrive failure but im not thinking it wouldnt cause the computer to not run the post unless maybe it has complely stuck and will not spin at all wouldnt that in effect cause a system to go nuts.. the same as a stuck fan?..maybe someone else has a better ideal.

Replace the CMOS battery.
If no luck, then the best way to troubleshoot is to either swap out components or have them tested.
