System:

MOBO - Mercury Intel P4. (model no. PVM266AM-L)
CPU - Intel P4 2.8
MEM - 512MB PC2100
HDD - 80Gb
OS - Windows XP Pro
NET - Not Connected

Problem:

During normal use, after several minutes, the keyboard ceases to operate. Moments later, the mouse gives up the ghost as well. During normal use, the device manager shows them both as working normal (both are PS2). When the keyboard fails, we go to the device manager to check (before the mouse fails) and the keyboard has disappeared. When both have packed up, we restart the computer and lo and behold, they are working again. (although it still failed after one reboot)

This problem occurs with all keyboards and mice as we have tried the computer with different known working peripherals.

All BIOS drivers are up to date.

Would a USB keyboard and mouse resolve the problem if it is a dry joint on the sockets on the board. (could a dry joint cause that intermittent problem or would there be a bios error message?)

Any help would be much appreciated. :)

Problem Solved. :D

It turned out the keyboard the guy was using an older keyboard which, despite having a PS/2 connector, had a flat cable. There was no Windows start key on the left hand side of the keyboard. I believe that this is a keyboard is for XT systems, is that right? The guy said that he'd tried it with a know working keyboard and the problem persisted. So much for getting the whole story from a customer. :(

So the keyboard was causing the first botch up and then the mouse would follow. I can understand the keyboard problem, but why would that cause a problem with the mouse???

I also have the same problem, the best thing to do is to isolate the problem first get another keyboard for isolation if that fix the problem its the keyboard making the trouble.
