Hello, Everyone: When i place my mouse pointer over an Icon in the Notification area (near clock) a Balloon ID comes up and tells me what the Icon is for and whether the icon is active etc. Even gives the date when placed over clock! My question is= where is this controlled at, i mean is there a box to check or something, maybe in registry? The reason i want to know is that it does not work sometimes and i have to reboot before i get it back! Sometimes it hides half of itself behind the taskbar too. Any Idea's? Tom

Hi Tom- There are a couple of ways to get rid of the annoying "Balloon Tips". One involves tweaking the registry, but the easiest way is to check out "Microsoft power toys", and download "Tweakui". After its installed, click on "Task bar" option (in tweakui), and uncheck the box called- "Enable balloon tips" Hope that helps.

Tom-After reading your post again, you may be talking about something else. Have you tried right clicking on taskbar, properties, start menu, customize, advanced? At the top you could uncheck the box "Open submenus when I pause on them with my mouse" If that or my first post doesn't cover it, I don't know what else to tell you http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/confused.gif

jabarnutcase: Sorry i took so long to get back to you, but i forgot where i posted this! I tried to uncheck the box you mentioned but it must be seperate thing because i was still able to place the mouse over the icons near the clock and the square window came up to identify what the icons were! I will have to look around and ask around to find out where these are controlled. There must be a reason that they stop working sometimes and even hide half way in back of the taskbar! If you or anyone finds out where they are controlled please let me know? Thanks Tom

Hi Tom,

I think you are talking about the box of text that pops up when you mouse over an icon in the system tray (so, for example, when I mouse over the clock box it says:"Weekday,Month Day Year"). If so, I believe that it is called a 'Tool Tip.'

I read a while back that the behavior you describe is a known issue, but not a high priority. A couple of old NG threads about the subject: here (http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&frame=right&th=e4afe45e6092ed7d&seekm=unnC4NctBHA.2332%40tkmsftngp07#link1) and below.

A workaround mentioned in one of the threads is to change the state of the taskbar (e.g. switch between 'auto-hide' and 'always on top' and back) seems to work for me.

John

Edit: the second link won't fit in a url box; if you like, just click here (http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=task+bar+tool+tip+group%3Amicrosoft.public.windo wsxp.general&btnG=Google+Search) for the google search I did.

john5211: Thank You for information, so i guess it is a bug that is not fixed yet, and nothing can be done till a fix is in! One other question= Why, when i click on (say) my Antivirus in the Customize section of Taskbar and choose "Always Show", does it go back to "Hide when Inactive" (on it's own)? That really bugs me(excuse the expression) because i cannot tell if my Antivirus is working, without seeing that ICon! Tom

Are you looking for:
Start> Settings> Taskbar and start menu> Autohide? you must click apply and OK it to take effect.
