Sony PCG NV 170 with XP Home. When I first boot up, my USB ports are active and devices work OK. If I unplug a device or devices the ports stop working, my indicator light on my jump drive will only light as I plug it in and will immediately go out. I would think this is an indication of no power being supplied to the USB device.
I have checked the device manager and all seems OK, I have even tried to uninstall the USB controllers then reboot the machine. Same problem after doing so.
Any help would be appreciated

See if the USB devices work on another system.
If so, then your USB hub is bad.
You can work around this by installing a USB PCI controller card.
